History: Contrary to most of the Shi’ar, Deathbird has been described as an “evolutionary throwback”.

Exiled from the Shi’ar Throneworld, and denied her place upon the throne – despite being the eldest of the siblings (Lilandra, sister; D’Ken brother), due to being found guilty of the murder of her father – who happen be the Emperor of the Shi’ar Empre at the time. It was D’Ken who would take over the throne after their father’s passing. It was later discovered that she was also responsible for the death of her mother.

Deathbird would eventually find herself stranded on Earth, where she found herself fighting Ms. Marvel, as well as Hawkeye, after aligning herself briefly with M.O.D.O.K.

Deathbird eventually escaped from Earth, and aligned herself with an alien species known as the Brood (nicknamed “Sleazoids”) in hopes of overthrowing D’Ken. She would eventually not only usurp D’Ken, but Lilandra as well, and become Empress of the Shi’ar Empire. When Skrulls maimed Deathbird’s wings, she sought out Lilandra’s allies – the Uncanny X-Men to assist her. Once the Skrulls were taken care of, Deathbird decided she did not want the throne, and Lilandra took over but named Deathbird viceroy due to how well she had taken care of the Shi’ar Empire while on the throne (despite her methods of attaining it).

Deathbird briefly began a relationship with the time-displaced Bishop, while the two had been lost in space. That relationship eventually came to an end, and Deathbird found a new mate; the long, lost Summer’s brother named Gabriel Summers, better known as Vulcan.

She had met Vulcan, after he had been captured by the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, while seeking revenge against the Shi’ar for what they had done to him (and his mother, Katherine Summers). A member of a secret order that wanted D’Ken back on the throne had released him; and he in turn, released Deathbird.

D’Ken was awakened from his coma, and sensed Vulcan’s love for Deathbird, and enacted an ancient ritual that allowed him to marry Deathbird and become royalty. Just after being married, Vulcan turned on D’Ken and killed him, thus taking over as the ruler of the Shi’ar Empire.

Vulcan would later perish in a battle, and disappear into the Cancerverse. Deathbird fled, but was captured by the Providian Order, who had no interest in her; but rather her child, which was a half-Shi’ar/half human mutant, and had injected the baby with Kree genetics.

Deathbird was later seen to still be pregnant and possessed by a group of rogue symbiotes who attacked S.W.O.R.D. and teleported to the X-Men headquarters. She was separated from the symbiote and later taken into custody.
