The story opens in the land of Pandona where the Bloodguard stalk the night, murdering those who serve the Overlord, Lord Kitaya.

However, as the assassins reach the rooftop – they’re confronted by one of Lord Kitaya’s most powerful Amita K’un – Nightwind! The Bloodguard rush forward, and Nightwind is able to cut down several of them before being forced to retreat herself.

Inside, the Overlord consults with his Chief Advisor, Bharat, unaware of the danger that draws near. Bharat tells the Overlord how House Eichon – whom House Dracus overthrew – has been selling heirlooms and the like for money, and that perhaps there is a threat here that’s not yet been seen. The Overlord asks his son, Marat, if he’s heard anything of House Eichon, but his son dismisses the idea that House Eichon could ever pose a threat. His father dismisses his son who claims to be tired.

We see that the Amita K’un are not on guard this night, save only for Nightwind; and the Bloodguard of House Eichon have made it to the Overlord’s throne! Bharat tries to defend the Overlord, claiming that there must be a spy for House Eichon who knew this was the only night that the Amita K’un would not be actively guarding the Overlord – so House Eichon knew to send their Bloodguard to kill the Overlord. However, the Bloodguard come for the Chief Advisor, Bharat, and murder him – but Nightwind arrives to try and fight the Bloodguard. The Bloodguard warn her that she is alone – but that is not so, as Master Sun and the other Amita K’un arrive. The Bloodguard take their own lives by plunging daggers into their hearts. The Amita K’un tell Nightwind that she has done good, but before passing out from her own injuries, she explains they were not after the Overlord, but rather the Chief Advisor, Bharat.

After three days of touch and go, Nightwind finally regains consciousness and is told that the Overlord wishes to speak with her. She gets dressed and kneels before the Overlord, who compliments her skill and determination, and requests that she become his personal guard – and that she is to tell Master Sun of the Overlord’s request.

She returns to Master Sun and confesses she does not wish to be the Overlord’s personal guard, but Master Sun convinces her that she is a weapon and weapons do not have a choice in how they are used. He also explains that only three have ever been asked to be the Overlord’s personal task. But tonight, she is still Amita K’un – and that he has a task for her. She will go with First to House Eichon. When she asks if this is for a vendetta, Master Sun simply replies, “Not yet.” When she asks about the three who have been the Overlord’s guards before her, Master Sun explains that two died, and one is her Sensei (Master Sun) himself.
