- Adrian Silverstrength (Human Paladin)
- Buppido Diinkarazan (Rock Gnome Cleric/Wizard)
- Sephrenia (High Elf Cleric) – Not Present
- Ragnaroc (Aasimar Warlock) – Not Present
- Don Kannin (Half-Elf Ranger)
- Korra (Air Genasi Rogue)
- After the rest in the Wizard’s tower; the party heads into town for food and drink, and to help around the town, as well as gather information
- When the party reconvenes back at their wagons, neither Ragnaroc or Sephrenia show up again
- The party searches around the town and can’t seem to find them
- The party goes to Kraun’s wagon, since he seems rather resourceful and has his hands in everything
- Kraun apologizes to the party about the missing members; and explains he’s not heard anything – but he will apply his… resources… to see if he hears anything – and to perhaps go find the gem skull and if they come back – maybe by then – he will have heard something
- Bristor, who is the guard who had escorted Adrian and Buppido previously to meet with Kraun about the gem looks visibly upset and seems as if he might know more
- Don warns, “I don’t know what happened to your brother, but you clearly have enemies. Don’t make the mistake of making more out of us.”
- DM Note – When I ask Don to roll an Intimidation; we noticed something weird going on with how Beyond20 was interacting with D&D Beyond. Something that would go on to be the bane of this entire session – as we discovered D&D Beyond made an update to their site that broke Beyond20’s functionality. This was fixed soon after the game and reporting it – but crippled this session.
- The party begins discussing if they should head into the Thieves Guild
- Adrian brings up without Sephrenia – they’re down their Priestess – so healing may be an issue; Buppido lets them know he has one level in Cleric, and Adrian says he has some healing with his Paladin abilities; but perhaps heading to the potion vendor is the best action
- The party heads for the potion vendor – a store called The Crowfeather.
- An attractive human female comes from the back and introduces herself as Isabella Crowfeather
- She explains that she would appreciate anything they purchase; the funds will help go into helping her rebuild the store – Adrian catches his breath when he sees her, and clears his throat
- When Buppido asks how much a standard healing potion is, Isabella says it’s 50 gold; this causes Korra to walk out and leave the shop
- Isabella looks at Adrian, “Is there anything I can do for you?” Adrian stammers, “Your beauty has captured my heart,” and realizes he said it out loud. Adrian rolls a Charisma check – and rolls horribly – so he burns his Inspiration – and gets a much better roll. Her cheeks blush and she says, “I have not heard such kind words in so long. Since the dragon’s attack, many don’t care for much.” He rolls a very high Persuasion after saying that it’s a shame, because her beauty should be admired. She reaches across the table and whispers, “I can sell my potions to you for 25 gold. But do not tell the others.” Adrian smiles and says, “Perhaps later we can go out for a drink then?” She nods, and blushes, “That would be nice. The tavern is still being rebuilt – but there’s a pop up tent that they serve some drinks.”
- Adrian ends up buying ten potions from Isabella; he kisses her hand as he turns around and leaves the shop
- Buppido finds a stool and stands on it and tries to mimic Adrian’s body language, having caught part of their conversation where she had she would sell it to Adrian for 25 gold, and leans on the counter, and winks, “What he said.”
- Isabella laughs and says, “You’re very cute. I can sell them to you for 35 gold.”
- Buppido smiles and purchases one.
- Don purchases two potions at normal price, and says, “I won’t purchase them at a discounted price – here’s one hundred gold to go to helping you rebuild your shop.”
- The party reconvenes at their wagon and Adrian shares his potions with everyone
- Korra leads the party to the wharf and climbs down the slippery rocks towards the entrance
- Climbing down the rocks, Korra slips on the rocks as does Adrian, who slips tumbling down into Korra as they slam into the rocks for some trivial damage
- Buppido and Don easily climb down the rocks
- Korra opens the secret passage and the party heads inside
- Korra spots some Thieves Cant on the wall that reads:
A warning to heed
Control your greed.
For these sewers are trap filled
To protect the guild.
One left turn
May seem right.
Your ashes in the urn
Flicking, smoldering, to create the light.
Your spirit will travel south
Into the demon’s mouth.
You will find a king’s horde
But take neither coin nor sword.
Before you enter the room
Bow before your King
Or meet your Doom
And lose everything.
- The party begins making their way through the sewers; discovering a button that lowers down a draw bridge to allow them to safely cross some of the areas where no bridge is present
- They eventually reach a room, where the sole item is an unassuming urn
- Adrian lits a torch and puts it in the urn and sees it get magically consumed; and to the north the sound of stone grinding becomes clear
- The party ventures south – and reaches a dead end and triggers a trap that releases gas, rendering Bupiddo unconscious for almost an hour – so they turn around and head back north (carrying the slumbering Bupiddo)
- They see what appears to be a demon’s mouth, opened wide
- Investigating the demon’s mouth, they find a switch – and by this time Buppido has been slapped enough times to be awakened – and uses Mage Hand to flip the switch which opens a gate; the party moves through the gate and finds a room with a massive treasure
- On the left is a pile of gold, on the right is gold, a sword, some gems and a golden trumpet
- Thinking back the warning said touch neither gold nor sword
- Adrian picks up the trumpet and blows into it; and unfortunately rolls a horrible performance check
- Don attempts to do what Adrian did with the trumpet; and somehow makes it worse
- Korra gives it a try; and suddenly a stone grinding sound is heard; and a stone statue surfaces
- The party bows; and darkness consumes them all
- They awaken in a room where an attractive human stares at them in bewilderment
- Buppido mentions he’s interested in joining an occult, and Korra gives him a scowling look
- Kin chuckles and says, “We’re not a cult. We’re a team of expert acquires and sellers of… exotic… things. There is however, something of a cult, in the form of wererats down here.”
- The party asks about the wererats and Kin explains, “Dorel Blackblight, who leads the wererats – he and the others were once Raveclaw members – however, Dorel had hidden his infectious disease – until we acquired a skull with a gem inlaid in one eye – whatever that thing was – it drove Dorel to reveal his disease – and he proceeded to infect others, who became loyal to him and followed the madness he spewed – after stealing that cursed gem from us.”
- Adrian offers to take care of the wererat problem, and Kin shrugs, “If you’d be so foolish, or so kind – we’d greatly appreciate. Kill as many as you can and let the ocean claim their corpses. Since Dorel’s rebellion – he and the wererats have been attacking us, murdering our contacts who refuse to go to their side, and doing everything they can to shut us down. His entire clan are all now infected with the disease.”
- The party asks about the gem, and Kin explains that they had the gem skull for so little time before Dorel went mad and took it
- Adrian mentions that someone on the caravan had approached him about recovering a gem similar to what Kin had described; and if Kin knew who it was
- Kin nodded and said he was familiar with Kraun, a wealthy Tiefling businessman, who gladly flaunted his gold; which naturally drew the guild’s attention; but Kraun surrounds himself with guards and wizards, making him a difficult target. When they’d first heard of Kraun’s interest they were going to sell it to him, because he’d sent for inquiries about it weeks before the wagons arrived – and in that time, Dorel did what he did
- Kin also mentions that Dorel stole a special dagger from him called Lycanblade, which is very effective against his kind
- DM Note – The “Servants of the Wizard” game is set in the future, which is was just me connecting this game to the “Servants of the Wizard” (off week) game, where Aros eventually comes into possession of Lycanblade
- Don steps up and asks Kin, “So we’ve heard that your comrades had an interest in me. And a woman we may mutually know.”
- Kin looks Don over and nods, “Ah. The woman – Lourna Mauthtar. She has the … same interests as we do down here… or she did in the beginning. She was once a rogue,” and as Kin says this, this reminds Don of how he’d met her trying to steal his food while he’d been out in the wilderness. “She told us about someone who, by the looks of it – is you,” Kin says, looking Don up and down, “and about your whirlwind romance. She said that she knew that somehow, you’d come looking for her one day. She had stayed with us – up until the dragon attack. When the undead dragon struck – something in her changed. She knew that it wasn’t rumors anymore, she said, that the dragons were truly back in the world. She’d heard stories of their return, but never seen one until that night. She took a vested interest in a rumored organization known as The Cult of the Dragons. She took a caravan to the Broken Lands – and some of my contacts there reported seeing her in the broken lands on a Blue Dragon known to terrorize the lands named Cobalt. She’s… changed. Once where she stole coin for a living, now it seems she steals lives.”
- The party thanks Kin for the information and heads deeper into the sewers where Kin has pointed out where Dorel and the others have taken up residence
- The party notices that as they proceed, it becomes more dark, and far more odorous; and some of them become nauseated by the odor (putting some of them at disadvantage)
- The party continues on; and down below they encounter a Rust Monster
- Adrian and Buppido try to swap places with Korra and Don, and Adrian slips and falls into the sewer (and his flailing) draws the attention of an alligator
- Buppido tries to slide around Don, and Buppido slips into the water
- With the water being five feet (deeper than Buppido’s height) and wearing medium armor, Buppido is forced to keep treading water making spell casting impossible
- They eventually make quick work of the Rust Monster and Alligator, Buppido spending most of his time during combat in the sewer water and getting helped up after combat is done
- Making their way forward, they hear a shrill voice crying out, “My legion grows! Our time is nearly at hand! I’ve learned so much now! We shall kill Kin and rule them all!”
- The party moves further ahead and sees the sewer opening to a larger room – and inside, a tattered table, where there is a light green color emanating from there
- The party decides to ambush and surprise Dorel and his wererat minions with Don firing his energy bow while Buppido unleashes a fireball
- When the flames end; Dorel emerges from the flames and the only other two survivors of the attack, emerge. Dorel growls, “The cowardly Kin sends puppets!” as he’s holding the green skull gem; and he shouts, “Take them!” And here and his two minions change into their wererat form
- Don whispers the command to make the Starbow focus on Dorel as his sworn enemy
- The party manages to kill the minions and discover that most of their non magical weapons were not inflicting as much damage as it should have
- In the end, it’s Korra stepping out of the shadows, leaping at him, plunging the daggers into his ribs and injecting the poison as she whispers, “Kin sends his regards,” as she pulls out the dagger and kicks the dying Dorel into the sewer, his limp hand releasing the dagger he was holding (Lycanblade) as alligators in the sewer feed on him. The party recovers the gem skull which he also dropped – and Korra hears the voice whisper, “I can promise you great power.” (Korra rolls and fails the Wisdom Save; but uses her Inspiration to re-reroll the Wisdom Save and does worse) – and suddenly the color of her eyes turn green, “Never mind. I will carry this,” as she hears the gem skull whispers, “You don’t need them, all you need is me.”
- The Wisdom Save DC increases; but Korra is finally able to release it and put it into Buppido’s bag
- The party searches the corpses in the room and recovers some gold that’s split between the party
- The party returns to Kin, and they explain they were not able to recover the dagger – Dorel fell into the sewage when he died, gripping his weapon – he was devoured and torn apart by alligators
- Kin asks about the gem skull, and the party tells him that they have it; and he asks if Kraun is the one they’re going to sell it too
- The party asks if they know who might be able to destroy it; and Kin mentions that there’s an enemy Thieves Guild there called The Forgotten Sands – and their leader is someone named Ninesword who would have the information you seek
