Having successfully done one job for Mayor Blackfoot, the Mayor had his guards summon the party once more. He explains to the party that there are some “assassins” that he needs escorted back to Ridgecrest. When questioned why the prisoners were not in the Ridgecrest prisons already, Mayor Blackfoot explained that there is a prison outside of the Ivory Coast Kingdom, in a bordering country where they are “less ethical” about how to handle prisoners in a place called The Ebonwild; and that information was needed from the assassins that the Mayor could not ask his own guards to try and extract, knowing the assassins would hold their tongues and endure the maximum amount of punishment a “normal” person could commit on another. He goes on to explain that there had been an attempted prison break, and if these two assassins got out, that it would spell disaster. So rather than risk that, he wanted them escorted back to Ridgecrest where they could be thrown in prison, and forego any information being extracted from them.
The party agrees and prepares for the week long voyage, given rations and a wagon by the Mayor. The night the party leaves (through a secret exit, due to the doors still being closed because of the “disease” – actually, the mass murderer loose in Ridgecrest), a storm approaches and brings rain and thunder. A day on the road, and the party encounters a gnome, on the side of the road, selling like life wooden fairies. Suspicious the party investigates, and despite the gnome’s effort to convince the party that he is a legitimate woodsman, a fight breaks out and the gnome releases four dark faye from the small chest in front of him, and slips into the shadows of the dark night in the confusion. As the party battles the dark faye, the gnome suddenly springs out from the shadows and delivers a massive back stabbing attack on Twig. Twig manages to reach back and pull the gnome from his back and snap his neck. The rest of the dark faye are defeated shortly after. As the party looks about, all of them are suddenly consumed by sleep – except for Brolimir who finds himself surrounded by the light of the Faye. They explain that the gnome was evil, and using a traps to capture the Faye and then using a magical wand to turn them to wood. The faye demand that Brolimir free the wooden faye; explaining that the evil wand is in the magical chest (that held the Dark Faye). Brolimir manages to recover the dark wand, but finds that he’s not able to revert the spell. The Faye explain that one touched by darkness must undo what’s been done. Brolimir awakens Kai, and she is able to revert the dark magic. A thankful Pixie travels with the party, teaching Kai the Dragon Faye language, to allow her to speak with her Pseduo-Dragon.
During one of the nights on watch, the party is attacked by a wereboar, but they manage to defeat the creature. The party continues their travels, reaching the border of the other country where they discover that the laws of this land are very different; as many elves are in shackles and chains, sold as slaves. The party resumes their travels and eventually arrives at the “prison” according to the map, which is nothing more than what appears to be a heavily guarded wine vineyard. Inside, Twig engages in conversation (and a drink) with the Captain of the Guard. He explains that they are low on men, and most of his men are guarding the vineyard to prevent the elf slaves from escaping. He explains that one of his men can lower them down into the prison below the vineyard and they can get the two prisoners requested by Mayor Blackfoot. The party is immediately suspicious that something is amiss, but not able to prove anything. The party is lowered in the prison, with no way back out, and discover a gruesome scene. Many of the prisoners have been killed, some half eaten. Kai had heard of creatures – dark fey – called Meerlocks that have recently surfaced around the country. Recovering the two prisoners, the party found that the real Captain of the Guard was dead, buried beneath fallen barrels. Moving the barrels, they found an escape. With some difficulty the party manages to make it through the small tunnel and vent, and after a fight with two guards by their wagon, made their escape and returned the two assassins back to Mayor Blackfoot.
Mayor Blackfoot confirms that the two assassins (Jek and Flen) are Dopplegangers. When the party explains that they found the real Captain of the Guard dead, the Mayor explains that the Captain must have been replaced by a Doppleganger as well (who was probably there to rescue the two assassins, before the Meerlocks invaded the prison, forcing the Doppleganger to forego his mission). The Mayor explains that the Doppleganger of the Captain of the Guard must be killed; and that he’d pay the party to do it.
