The party discovers that the missing villager who had gone to the temple and not returned (not was his body found at the temple) is a farmer by the name of Varek. However, before much more can be discovered, that a farmer by the name of Lingus has learned that his son has disappeared. A farmer, at the Lion’s Maw tavern, where the party is staying, by the name of Koroland explains that Lingus’ son (Erowyn) had disappeared while cutting through some fields. A search party, looking for Erowyn, found evidence where he had been cutting through the field – but there, only found his hat, scarf and one of his shoes. Other than that, there was no apparent sign of a struggle, and the residents of the Ivory Vale, and surrounding farms, all knew “the demon had returned.” Koroland explained to the party, approximately every nine years, a demon comes and takes a three young males, over the course of several weeks, as a sacrifice, before moving on. The demon has claimed, over the last fifty years, the demon has feed on about thirteen young men. Because those taken by the demon are never heard or seen from again, and the Ivory Vale, and surrounding farms, have simply accepted that this will simply happen. Due to the constant barrage of goblins attacks, and the increased danger of the rabid wolves, it’s become nearly impossible to send out an armed group that might seek to find this demon and put an end to its reign of terror.
The mayor, of the Ivory Vale, Belgar Daggeredge, hires the party to investigate the demon, since he can’t spare any soldiers. Koroland offers what little information he has about the demon, and recommends speaking to Marcella, who is an old wise woman, who has “dabbled” in the ways of Witchcraft and the like, giving her a familiarity about demon lore. Marcella bestows the same knowledge, already given, about the demon’s habits and explains, she can’t confirm what kind of demon it is, because the Ivory Vale has been under constant attack by goblins – and now wolves – that, she herself, has not been able to go out and look into clues as to what kind of demon this is.
The party, risking attack from wolf and goblin, makes their way out – first by heading to the field that Erowyn disappeared from. From there, Brolimir is able to pick up tracks. Following further out in the field, the party enters a small grove of trees and hills, where there’s no sounds what so ever. The party soon finds themselves ambushed by what appears to be humanoid crows – called Kenku – who are drawn to the “demon’s” taint.
After a battle with Kenku, and dispatching them, Twig skins one of the creatures to keep its hide, and rolls the bloody mess into his backpack. Moving on, Urthez finds an unusual rock formation in the side of the hill, that sticks out of place. Examining it closer, he discovers it’s no normal rock formation; but “man made.” Removing several rocks, he sees that it leads to a tunnel inside the side of the hill. Removing more rocks, and climbing into the passage, it opens up to a larger room that is littered with bones – most of them, human sized. Believing they’d located the lair of the demon – the rest of the party moved in and made their way through the small cavern in the burrow. Failing to notice an alarm, Urthez triggers it, which rings a small bell further down the tunnel. Cursing himself for missing the alarm, the rest of the party proceeded with caution until they reached the back of the tunnel, that opened up to a larger room and found themselves attacked by “the demon.”
After a battle with the demon, which turned out to be a creature called a berbalang, the party discovers Erowyn’s body, and realize they were too late to save him. However, they had successfully dispatched the demon so that it would claim no others lives. The party returned to the Ivory Vale. Twig gives the Kenku’s hide to Marcella, who explains, give her a few days, and she can make a fine cloak for the barbarian to wear.
