TENJII Character Background
Tenjii was unlike any other gnome; unusual, even among her people, which are already a rather unusual bunch. Tenjii had no interest in gathering materials, as some gnomes do; nor was she interested in making contraptions that used steam. Instead, Tenjii frequently found herself acquiring things, simply for the sake of acquiring them. Sometimes she would take a fellow gnome’s plans for a steam powered rock smasher; not to do anything with the plans; simply for the sake of seeing if she could get away with taking it unnoticed.
One day, a gathering was held in the gnome “Great Hall” where many gnomes shared their frustration of various things being “misplaced.” Finally a house search was done, gnomes going home to home, until they came to Tenjii’s home and found all of which had “gone missing.”
Tenjii was asked to explain her actions, for which she couldn’t. She tried to explain why others seemed to enjoy the thrill of inventing the next best steam powered rock smasher; she found that same thrill in “acquiring” items.
The gnome community eventually voted and thought that she would do better “venturing into the outside world” which was full of “wonders she had never seen.” (This was essentially the gnome’s polite way of saying, “You’re exiled until we forget what you’ve done! Now shoo!”)
Venturing into the outside world, Tenjii became one of the very, very, very few gnomes to actually go outside of their home into the outside world. Indeed, in the outside world, she found an assortment of wonders that she had never seen before trapped within the stone walls of the gnome community.
She acquired a great many of things, and frequently found herself in trouble with the law, of various cities and towns, until eventually hearing about the fall of King Saric’s castle – and that, according to legend and rumor, King Saric had amassed an assortment of jewels and magic items to one day fight against the great evils that had come into the land. However, betrayed from within King Saric’s castle fell to the orcs.
Tenjii made her way to Guardstone, a city just outside of King Saric’s castle, where she learned the king was still alive; but was hiring a small party to go into the castle to find any clues to the fate of his wife, daughter and son. Tenjii opted to join in the hunting expedition, just in case there were a few new things she could pick up. In truth, Tenjii is driven by the “Touch of Bargledar” – in which gnomes are “compelled” to acquire things (especially gems) in an attempt to rebuild “The Great Star.”
