Deities

For a bulletined time line, please see Time Line of the Gods.

There are two primary “Circles” – The Circle of Light, which are the “good aligned” deities; and there is the Circle of Shade, which is the “evil aligned” deities. There are also Intermediate Gods & Demigods, who are not “true gods” in the sense that they were not directly created from Florasena (Goddess of Life), or through Thyamat  (Goddess of Doom).

The Heavens, in which the deities & demigods dwell is broken up into the following Planes:

  • Aftgrand – The High Plane. This is the Plane, from which most of the good aligned gods dwell, along with hundreds of Immortals. Aftgrand is said to be a Plane, whose beauty, mortal words could never describe.
  • Brengrand – The Middle Plane. This is often times called “The Material Plane” as many believe that Brengrand is actually a reference to the world of Kne’Urth itself.
  • Garengrand – The Fallen Plane. The Fallen Plane is said to be a place of desolate landscapes , and void of life, as it is also void of hope. It is said to be this way because this is where the “evil” aligned deities & demigods dwell; and their inability to work with one another or trust one another, has waged so much war, that there is nothing left.

COINS OF KNEURTH AND RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM

The coins of KneUrth are also a part of “The Circle.” On one side of the coin is the image of Florasena, as she is portrayed; with the other side being Dedinsyn, as he is portrayed. The coin represents the circle and the balance of Life and Death. The toss of a coin is often used to determine good or ill fortune.

Religious Beliefs

Those who follow the Gods and Goddess of Light, believe that in the afterlife, if they have lived a positive and worthy life style that they will be brought forward to the Halls of Aftgrand, where they will be reunited in a heavenly place, with family and friends, all of them forever in their happiest moments in life.

Those that are worthy to be brought to the Halls of Aftgrand by Dedinsyn’s ravens, who carry the souls of the deceased upon their wings. Those that have committed great, vile crimes are punished by Dedinsyn’s ravens, who seek out the souls and remove the eyes of the soul, trapping the souls forever, unable to find their way to the Halls of Aftgrand as punishment. Note: In many cases, the living will often remove the eyes of a deceased person, if they believe the person has committed horrible crimes and does not deserve to have their souls enter the Halls of Aftgrand.

THE CIRCLE OF LIGHT

FLORASENA – The Goddess Of Life.
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Light, Nature, Knowledge
Alias: Flora, Faemaker, Angelika
Plane: Aftgrand, The High Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshipers: Healers, Farmers, Commoners
Symbol: Rising Sun over the horizon; three rays of light (lines) around the sun

Florasena is the Mother of all the Gods. The story goes that each of the Gods is a drop of her own blood, from which they were born. She is the most revered, and by far, the most powerful. She is the one that has the most temples built in her name throughout the lands of KneUrth. Legends have stated (usually by humans!) – that Florasena has always preferred the creation of humans, which she was responsible for.

Original legends stated that Florasena found the empty world of KneUrth and sought to bring life to it. Giving the once barren, dusk planet life, plants, and water – she watched as KneUrth grew ever slowly. She knew that she alone could not watch the entire planet as it began to evolve, and used drops of her own blood to great the other Greater Deities of the Circle (Dedinsyn, Nifika, Jarisfargen, and Furdina). Later it was revealed that she had asked Nifika to create The Three Planes, and within the Middle Plane, she asked Jarisfargen to forge the world now known as Kne’Urth.

She is the one that all of the Circle turn to and revere and is without a doubt, the supreme being among the Circle. In the Plane of Aftgrand, Florasena supposedly resides in a tower in the middle of the most lush and green forest, so high in the heavens, that she’s capable of seeing every little detail that happens in the world of KneUrth.

During a battle with Tyhamat that left her near death and have birth to the Chromatic Dragons that faithfully served Tyhamat; Florasena, still critically wounded sought the help of Jarisfargen to forge something to combat the dragons. Gathering Tyhamat’s blood that was on Florasena, Jarisfargen used the Forge of Life and the elements of the world to create metallic dragons. With the help of Nifika, she was able to use magic to remove the vile corruption found in the blood and Jarisfargen was able to forge armies of Metallic Dragons, unleashing upon the world: Silver, Gold, Brass, Bronze, and and Copper Dragons to combat the Chromatic Dragons.

The Churches of Florasena are typically elaborate and made of the finest marble, and always decorated and full of plants.

DEDINSYN – The God Of Death.
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Knowledge, Nature, War
Alias: The Broken One, The Shadow, Herandar
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: True Neutral
Worshipers: Priests
Symbol: Three ravens (two side by side, one between them/behind them)

When Florasena gave life to the planet KneUrth, she knew that she had to balance out the world by making the beings she had given life to – mortal. With a drop of her own blood, she created Dedinsyn, the God of Death. While death is an ending to life, and a balance to the world – Death is not viewed as something that is good or evil; for it cares not whose life it takes. Dedinsyn is often envisioned as always wearing a black cloak, with a hood that hides the features of his face, save for his red eyes.

The Temples of Dedinsyn are viewed as extremely sacred, as that’s where the dead are taken, so that they might find their way to Dedinsyn, despite whoever the person may have worshiped in life.

The priests of Dedinsyn, whether male or female, always shave their heads completely, and wear a mask of purple paint, that is made from Dedinberry – a type of berry that’s lethal if swallowed, even in the smallest of doses.

Dedinsyn is said to control crows that he sends to the battle fields to collect the souls of the fallen.

FURDINA – Goddess Of Stealth (and favored by Halfmen)
Greater Deity
Domain: Trickery (Primary), Knowledge, War
Alias: Little Mouse, Serlena
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshipers: Halfmen, Rogues
Symbol: A Shadowed figure against the wall, with only eyes showing

It is believed that Skortaurian is responsible for the creation of Furdina. Legend states that Grumthak had wanted to populate the world with being similar to the humans that had been created. The legend states that Skortaurian had captured a drop of the blood that was used to create humans. Returning to Grumthak with the blood, the God of War had tried to corrupt the blood, but something had gone terribly wrong. The result had been Furdina, who could not be corrupted. However, she had very little regard for anything lawful, and enjoyed mischief and trickery over all else.

Infected by her insatiable curiosity, Furdina entered Aftgrand and took a sample of Florasena’s blood and unleashed HalfMen upon the world, springing about the hills and forming small communities. Most of her creation simply seek the simple life, however, some are infatuated with the idea of adventure and a sense of curiosity that can not be fulfilled, granting them a near invulnerability to fear.

JARISFARGEN – God Of Earth (and favored by Dwarves)
Greater Deity
Domain: War (Primary), Life, Knowledge
Alias: Thundermaker, Jaris, Forge Greybeard
Plane: Brengrand, The Middle Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshipers: Smiths, Dwarves
Symbol: Two hammers criss-crossed in front of a forge

Like the other Greater Deities of The Circle, Jarisfargen (often just called Jaris) was made from Florasena’s blood. Jarisfargen was made to help forge the world. KneUrth, when populated by beings and animals by Florasena, was a barren world – with no changes in climate, as well as having no plains, mountains, hills – it was simply a barren, bleak land, and thus few things survived, despite Florasena’s best efforts to bring life to the world of KneUrth.

Jarisfargen, with his mighty hammer, struck the world repeatedly – and through his multiple strikes in the land, sundered it so that hills and mountains formed. His strikes also hit with enough force to rupture holes in the world that filled with water, creating lakes, rivers and oceans.

Legend states that from the sparks of his forge, came the dwarves that took refuge within the depths of the mountains, drawn by the metal that their god had been drawn to in the heavens. It is said, because the dwarves were beneath the ground, that they were initially unseen by Dedinsyn’s crimson eyes. But when the dwarf population grew out of control, Jarisfargen made their presence known to Dedinsyn, and through a deal struck with Jarisfargen, the dwarves were made mortal, but blessed to be able to live nearly 200 years old.

There are near infinite amount of stories of dwarves, who claimed to have seen Jarisfargen in their dreams, wielding his mighty forge hammer, and inspiring them before the many battles the dwarves have found themselves fighting against an assortment of vile creatures that also dwell deep within the mountains.

Early in KneUrth’s creation, many believed that the thunder that pounded in the heavens was actually Jarisfargen hard at work on his forge; and the rain was the cooling waters he used on the metals he forged.

NIFIKA – Goddess Of Magic (and favored by Elves)
Greater Deity
Domain: Knowledge (Primary), Trickery, War
Alias: The Weaver, Janisha
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshipers: Elves, Humans (Mages)
Symbol: A large tree with a massive top, and hundreds of roots reaching down.

Nifika is said to be the most beautiful of goddesses; even more so than Florasena herself. Nifika has been envisioned as having both golden hair, that according to legend, is weaved from the rays of the sun itself; to a fiery red hair, that is supposedly from the color of the two moons that hang in KneUrth’s skies.

Nifika is said to be the one that brought elves into the world, as her part in KneUrth’s creation when she was born. Assigned the duty of helping KneUrth shape the magic that swirled through it – she used the magic to make elves, which were born with a natural ability to wield and weave magic. It is said that she enhanced Elves with magic, which gives them the life span that allows them to live nearly 200 years of age.

Nifika rarely has temples within human cities; but most Elven cities will have statues erected of what they believe Nifika to look like in the center of their cities. Among humans, it is typically the wizards, mages, and sorcerers who hold Nifika in high regard, but do not actively practice worshiping her in a temple; rather they merely give thanks to her each night after a hard night of studying magic, for the special gift that they have been given; for magic among humans is a very rare gift.

CIRCLE OF SHADE

TYHAMAT – Goddess of Doom
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Tempest, Trickery, War
Alias: The Head Of Five, Doomshadow
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Worshipers: Humans
Symbol: Five dragon heads (Red, Blue, Black, White, Green)

Tyhamat is said to be a chromatic dragon, with five heads; each head capable of unprecedented destruction; a red dragon head, for fire; a blue dragon head, for lightning; a white dragon head for frost; a black dragon head for acid; and a green dragon head for lethal gas.

Deemed the Goddess of Doom, Tyhamat is worshiped by a wide variety of races on the World of KneUrth, even if their allegiance is to another god or goddess of the Circle of Shade. Legend states that on the Day of Terrarack, it will be a battle against Tyhamat and Valingard that will bring the end – and that’s when the mortals, on both sides – will be called to the Heavens to take part in the battle, which will, in the end, destroy KneUrth.

The birth of the Chromatic Dragons came during a battle between Tyhamat and Florasena. Tyhamat had managed to gravely wound Florasena during a battle in the heavens; and Florasena had bled upon Tyhamat’s scales. Tyhamat used her own corrupt magic to give birth to dragons of her scales – unleashing upon the world dragons of Red, Black, Blue, White and Green.

GRUMTHAK – God of War, Strength, Orcs
Greater Deity
Domain: War (Primary), Knowledge, Nature
Alias: Doomwalker
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Worshipers: Orcs, Ogres, Warriors
Symbol: Single eye, surrounded by two facing half moons

Skortaurian had been sent by Grumthak to steal Florasena’s blood, and had managed to do so; but their attempt to create an evil race failed, as they had unwillingly created Furdina. Not to be outdone, Grumthak cut his palm open and let his blood fall upon the world, like crimson rain. Those touched by his blood, with malicious and evil in their hearts found that their bodies changed and deformed, making Orcs; decimating the human population, as Orcs sprung forth. Second in population, only to the humans, orcs have spread across the world of KneUrth and placed their hold in the world. Grumthak is one of the most widely worshiped gods of the Circle of Shade.

Worshipers of Grumthak, Orcs are naturally war like, believing that it is strength that rules, not wisdom. Like all other races who follow the Circle of Shade, Orcs primarily worship Grumthak – but always give thanks to Tyhamat as well.

According to legend, Nifika, goddess of Magic and Elves, was so furious at Grumthak for bringing such evil and destruction to the world, that she had tried to kill him, shooting an arrow into his eye. Grumthak was forced to rip out the arrow and carve out his own eye, which he now wears around his neck. The Eye of Grumthak is said to make the wearer immune to magic.

It is because of this, Orcs have a distinct hatred for Elves, and when they capture an elf – they simply carve out their left eye and keep it as a treasure (and typically kill the elf, or leave them to die bleeding to death). Elf eyes are used as a form of monetary value among orc trading. No orc will ever take both eyes of an elf, despite the monetary value they possess among their community. The largest Orc tribe in KneUrth is an nomadic, war tribe, known as The Broken Hand. However, after the Broken Hand suffered devastating losses against the Ashen Elf – as well, as the restoration of the Life Forge and the Great Star, many of the Broken Hand lost their faith in their great god, and Shamans have turned to demons to seek power and revenge against the world.

Grumthak rides a celestial Worg with two heads named Braw’grin (which translates to Shadow of Death in the Orc tongue).

NOTE: It is legend that Beholders were born by the blood of Grumthak’s eye that fell to the world; his evil so great that Beholders came forth.

LAKRONA – Goddess of Lies and Deceit, Mistress of the Web.
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Knowledge, Tempest, Trickery
Alias: The Spider Queen, Mistress of Deception, Web of Lies, Mother of the Driders
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshipers: Dark Elves,
Symbol: A web with 8 points (for each direction on a compass), with an hour glass in the center

Though most who fall under the Gods of Shade, despite their alignment, acknowledge and follow Thyamat’s commands; Lakrona is one who does not. Lakrona has every intention of one day, dethroning Thyamat. Lakrona would never directly confront Thyamat, however; she relies on her ability to spin lies, as easily as the Spider Queen spins a web. Lakrona’s upper torso is that of a beautiful female dark elf (said to be as beautiful as Nifika herself, her twin sister), and her lower torso is that of a giant spider. Lakrona, like her twin sister, Nifika, were masters of the Magic arts. Where Nifika focused on the light, Lakrona became envious of her twin sister being able to do everything she could. Lakrona turned to the darker Magics to try and become more powerful than his sister. When the Gods of Light learned of her foul deeds, they cast her from Aftgrand and down into Garengrand, with the Gods of Shadow. Lakrona grew furious at her sister’s betrayal and sought to steal from her what mattered most; her precious followers – the Elves. She used her magic to enter the minds of the Elves, tempting them with more powerful – but darker – magics. Those who followed Lakrona’s ways, were banished – and dubbed ‘Dark Elves’ – for their skins became as dark as their souls. Dark Elves found that the light of the sun became to hurt their eyes (believed because the sun was Florasena, looking down at them), so they sought refuge where the sun never shown – deep in the mountains. This caused a war with the invading Dark Elves against the Dwarves who had already claimed the mountains as their home. The battles between Dwarf and Dark Elf rage on, even today. Deep in the mountains the Dark Elves formed a new society, driven down deep where life grew without the sun; mushrooms towered twenty feet high; and luminescent plants lit up the darkness. Here, the Dark Elves learned to survive against some of the horrors that dwelt so deep down below. Lakrona became their goddess of choice, and they worshiped her; her body became twisted the longer she existed in the shadows, her once beautiful body, now had a lower torso of a giant spider. Lakrona knew to further drive the spike into Nifika’s heart, just stealing these Elves from her was not enough; she occasionally blessed some births of these Dark Elves to be made in her image; so that they too, were born with an upper torso of an elf, and a bottom torso of a spider; these elves became known as Driders, and are highly regarded among the Dark Elves as ‘The Blessed Children.’

NOTE: Her Elder Name was discovered through texts found in the Broken Lands: L’orak’ana.

SARENTHAR – God of Healings, Viciousness, Trolls
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Knowledge, Trickery, War
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alias: Doomtoucher
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Worshipers: Priests, Trolls, Bugbears
Symbol: Four fingered hand, in front of a mangled face (believe to be a troll’s face)

Sarenthar is responsible, according to legend, for making Trolls and Bugbears. The cave dwelling Bugbears are one of the strongest forces that frequently march against the Dwarves within the mountains of the world of KneUrth. Bugbears use trolls, which are little more than rabid, savage humanoids as guardian pets, and often unleash them on the dwarves. The story goes that Sarenthar favors trolls – making them completely vicious and relentless, but also blessing them with the ability to heal themselves (something, among evil beings, he is often looked to).

Sarenthar demands that his worshipers sacrifice followers of The Circle in his name; often calling on his worshipers to be utterly demented in their sacrifice; the more demented, the more they are often rewarded favorably by Sarenthar. The legend states that it was vile torture and magic and twisted healing by the followers of Sarenthar, that gave birth to once imprisoned dwarves, turning them into the now vile dwarven race known as the Duergar. (Although Dwarven myth states that deep down, where a kingdom of dwarves had sought more unique metals, were trapped by a cave in; and noxious fumes had altered their state of mind and skin color to that charcoal black).

SKORTAURIAN – God of Venom, Poison, Disease and Spite
Greater Deity
Domain: Trickery (Primary), Life, Nature, Tempest
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alias: Doomstinger
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshipers: Human, Rogue
Symbol: Two daggers, crisscrossed, dripping liquid (ideally believed to be poison)

Skortaurian is one of the more devious of gods among the Circle of Shade. It was through Skortaurian’s ability to stealth and sneak into Aftgrand that allowed him to unleash a disease that infected and killed off a large population of Immortals that dwell there, with The Circle.

It had been this same transgression against The Circle that had led to the death of one of the most valiant Immortals, Treungard. However, Valingard, the young son of the Immortal and Florasena, who rose up against Skortaurian by picking up his father’s sword and shield and severing Skortaurian’s right arm. Cut with a blade of honor, not even Sarenthar’s dark healing was ever able to heal Skortaurian’s arm. It is said that Skortaurian’s arm fell from the heavens and down to the world, where it was feasted upon by rabid hyenas. It is said that the most vicious of the pack rose up and became known as a lesser god called Yeegowhen, filled with the very same spite and hatred that Skortaurian emanated.

Skortaurian appears as a vile humanoid lizard, with boils, open wounds, and puss seeping from his skin; from which he draws his disease, venom and poison.

He is most often worshiped by Assassins, and Rogues who tend to walk the darker side of life. Some warriors call on him also when they pray for poisoned blades before combat.

URNEVAR – God Of Necromancy
Greater Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Knowledge, Tempest, Trickery
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alias: Doombreath
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshipers: Human
Symbol: A skull with two red sockets for eyes

The Magic of Necromancy has long been forbidden in the World of KneUrth. While some priests of The Circle are able to commune with the dead; such acts as raising the dead or controlling the dead, are arts of magic that will lead to someone’s immediate arrest, and often, if proven guilt, their execution.

As a result, only those who follow in the steps of The Circle of Shade, are capable of calling on the darker arts of Necromancy. Urnevar appears as a skeleton within a black robe, with red eyes. There has often been speculation if there is some connection between Urnevar and Dedinsyn, as they both wear black robes, with red eyes. Some say that the twin red moons of the World of KneUrth, are the Eyes of Death watching over the world, decorated in blood.

Urnevar’s most common followers are humans, who turn to Necromancy, for one of two reasons usually – 1.) Because, unlike Elves, Dwarves, and Halfmen, Humans often only live to the age of 50 – so Humans often turn to Necromancy to see how they can extend their lifespan. 2.) Humans often turn to Necromancy after having lost a loved one, and seek to bring them back to life. Urnevar is quick to grant humans the ability to use Necromancy, as it corrupts their souls, and brings them to The Circle of Shade.

INTERMEDIATE DEITIES

While there are only five deities mentioned, in reality, Aftgrand is populated with an assortment of immortal beings; though most are not worshiped or have their own domains, in the more common religion of KneUrth. It is said that the Intermediate Deities are the children of someone from The Circle, who has mated with one of the other Immortals, who are not a part of The Circle. These children are born with special abilities and often worshiped by a large portion of the population.

AIRANA – Goddess Of Fertility
Intermediate Deity (Deceased)
Domain: Life (Primary), Love, Family
Alias: Sunrise
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshipers: Priests, Families, Expecting Mothers, Elves
Symbol: The Sun coming over the horizon

Airana is said to be the daughter of Florasena, but all references to Airana refer to her having an Elf-like appearance. Legends also say that her hair changes colors, representing the various colors of any given sunset/sunrise. Airana took over Kariayn’s Gardens of Life after Kariayn’s demise. She uses the seeds from the Garden of Life to plant the seed of life in expecting mothers.

AKANDA – God of Travel
Intermediate Deity (Deceased)
Domain: Travel (Primary), Nature, Freedom
Alias: Traveler, Wanderer
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Neutral Good
Worshipers: Rangers, Sailors, Druids, Merchants
Symbol: A path cutting through trees

Akanda is said to be able to change his form between human and elf. He travels with a wolf named Larn. Whether on land, sea or air, Akanda can never get lost, and his wolf, Larn, can track anyone or anything down, no matter the terrain. Larn’s eyes are described as celestial, while Akana’s eyes change depending on where he is (land, his eyes are green; sea, his eyes are blue; frozen, his eyes are white; and in the air, his eyes are transparent). He is primarily worshiped by Rangers and sailors, above all else.

ARIKREEL – Goddess Of Strength
Intermediate Deity
Domain: War (Primary), Life, Nature
Alias: The Bear
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshipers: Warriors, Kings, Farmers
Symbol: A sword and axe criss-crossed in front of a shield

While Dwarves will often dispute this, the legend states that Jarisfargen had one day drank too much (that’s the part the Dwarves discount, as they say there is never “too much”) within the heavens and had mated with a woman by the name of Brundenella. Jarisfargen, normally home on the Middle Plane of Brengrand, did not remain on Aftgrand and returned to the Middle Plane, leaving Brundenella to raise their daughter alone (another part the Dwarves claim not to be true – according to the Dwarven version, Brundenella returned to Brengrand and raised the child there and only returned to Aftgrand, when Arikreel was old enough to decide for herself).

Legend also states that an unknown disease struck the immortals, and many perished, becoming extremely ill before their death (which was later discovered to be from Skortaurian). Such a fate struck Brundenella, and during her time of illness, Arikreel took care of her and became the symbol of strength, as a young woman who did things that most males would shy away from. As a result, her praise spread and eventually she became the symbol of strength, and rewarded the goddess of strength.

As there are many legends that surround Arikreel’s origin, because of conflicting legends between the common tales and the Dwarven versions – one such legend that both sides agree on – is that Arikreel has often been “seen” as a unique form of bear called the Pynda (meaning eclipse, or “day and night”) Bear; which is a white bear, with black circles around their eyes, with black ears, black arms and legs.

BARGLEDAR – God Of Gnomes
Intermediate Deity
Domain: Light (Primary), Knowledge, Life
Alias: Starfall
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Worshipers: Gnomes, Jewel Crafters
Symbol: Three gems (one at the top, two at the bottom, side by side)

Much like Arikreel, the exact story behind Bargledar varies from the common telling versus the Dwarven version of his origin. The Common telling states that Bargledar was created when Jarisfargen pleaded with Florasena to create a lesser god for the gnomes. It is the origin of the gnomes on KneUrth that the dwarves also contest. The common origin of the Gnomes is that they are actually a cross breed between Dwarves and Halfmen. The Dwarves contest this to be a very false statement – as no male dwarf would mate with a female Halfman, since they have no beards or facial hair (which dwarven females do have!) and no female dwarf would ever mate with a Halfman, because male (and female, for that matter!) Halfmen lack any form of facial hair.

Despite the contrast of story of the origin of the Gnomes, the Gnomes looked to Jarisfargen as their god. Jarisfargen cared nothing for the Gnomes, and after endless pleading, Florasena supposedly made Bargledar, not from her blood, as she had done with the other Greater Deities, but with her tear that she shed, for the sadness she felt for the abandoned Gnomes.

Bargledar, much to Jarisfargen’s rumored dismay, dwells in the same Plane as Jarsifargen, and is said to have tried to imitate Jarisfargen’s forging skills, and struck The Great Star, that shattered and fell upon the world, with such force that it buried itself into the ground. It is said that Bargledar has since “suggested” to a select few gnomes to recover the gems so that he might one day repair the Great Star; this “inflection” is called “Touch of Bargledar” in which gnomes feel the compulsion to collect gems and jewels to see if they’re a part of the Great Star. (Gnomes do not view this as unusual or even thievery, since it’s for a greater cause).

BREZDEN – God Of Greed
Intermediate Deity
Domain: Greed (Primary), Chaos, Trickery
Alias: Shadow
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshipers: Dark Dwarves, Assassins
Symbol: A dwarven figure standing in front of moonlight

Dwarven brother to Jarisfargen, Brezden was full of envy when Jaris was selected to forge the world. Brezden stole the Life Stone that allowed life to be created, and hid away. Unfortunately, the power emanating from the Life Stone only fed Brezen’s envy and jealousy of his brother; so much so that Brezden sought to steal everything from his brother and was captured. However, no cell has ever been made that could hold Brezden more than an hour, and he escaped to Garengrand. He has the ability to move between Garengrand and Aftgrand effortlessly, causing as much chaos as he possibly can before slipping back to Garengrand.

DAHLIPARTON – Goddess of Song
Intermediate Deity
Domain: Knowledge (Primary), Life, Nature
Alias: Inspiration
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshipers: Bards
Symbol: Two lutes crisscrossed at the neck, in front of a bow harp

Dahliparton is said to take on a human form and travel the world of Kne’Urth as a beautiful, kind, and voluptuous human woman who uses her skill at music, singing and beautiful sexuality to charm those fortunate enough to behold one of her shows. For those patrons that call upon her (most often bards) – she grants them the ability to bestow inspiration to those who hear their song.

DRAKENFIEL – God Of Wisdom
Intermediate Deity (Deceased)
Domain: Knowledge (Primary), Life, Nature
Alias: The Giver, Erintar
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshipers: Farmers, Priests, Commoner
Symbol: The two moons with a line of five stars between the two spherical moons

Born from Nifika and the Immortal known as Sarynfar (“The Star Gazer”), Drakenfiel was born with a natural sense of incredible wisdom. Though farmers, priests and commoners look to Drakenfiel for wisdom and answers to problems they may be enduring in life; in truth, there are few who do not look to Drakenfiel for help during their lives.

The legend behind Drakenfiel is that there is no question that he does not know the answer to. However, Drakenfiel has taken it upon himself to ensure that not every single question is answered; and he will more often than not simply give clues, rather than direct answers. It had been Drakenfiel’s wisdom that had uncovered the answer to who had unleashed the disease upon the Immortals that took so many lives. Legend also states that Drakenfiel even knows the when the Day of Terrarack will occur, suggesting that perhaps he is gifted with visions of the future as well, as a part of his wisdom and knowledge.

Drakenfiel is always accompanied by a mystical raven named Foresight on his shoulder. Through the raven’s eyes, Drakenfiel is said to be able to see anything he desires (except for when Akanda and his wolf, Larn, wish to remain out of sight).

ELLAROS – God of Nature and Roots.
Intermediate Deity
Domain: Life (Primary), Knowledge, Nature, War
Alias: The Ancient Root, The World Root
Plane: Aftgrand, The Higher Plane.
Alignment: True Neutral
Worshipers: Druids, Rangers, Forest Gnomes, Wild Elves
Symbol: A large tree, with six roots pointing down, three branches to the left and right, and a large tree top – all in front of a yellow circle.

When Kariayn perished and her blood dripped upon the world – giving life to Treants life – there was one, an ancient Tree who gained sentience and absorbed her blood into its roots – and in doing so gained much of her power. Florasena sensing her daughter’s power elevated Ellaros into Aftgrand – the Higher Plane. Ellaros is often worshiped now by those who enjoy the balance of Nature, as well as many Wild Elves and the Forest Gnomes (whose population is quite low). Ellaros uses roots to plant Treants in woods in need of protection – often becoming homes for Dryads in those woods. Ellaros has also offered his branches as arrows or spears for Lynzee, goddess of the hunt.

ELENAR – God Of Wind, Fire, Water
Intermediate Deity (Deceased)
Domain: Tempest (Primary), Knowledge, Life
Alias: Hevanar

Legend states that Kariayn had sought permission from her mother to also bring life to the world, as the others in The Circle had done; but Florasena told her that she was not a Greater Deity, and thus would not be able to control the intense magic it takes to weave the Thread of Life. Skortaurian, the dark god known for his vile trickery, offered to help Kariayn. He explained that he would need several drops of blood from Florasena in order to help her. Kariayn was reluctant to believe Skortaurian truly had wanted to help her, but her desire to create life had gotten the best of her. Using one of Lynzee’s arrowheads, she nicked Florasena’s arm as she slept; drawing several drops of blood. When she returned to Skortaurian with the vials, he tried to take them all, but she had managed to wrestle one away from him.

Having seen Florasena perform the magic required for the Thread of Life, she disobeying her mother, Kariayn attempted the Thread of Life, and became responsible for the Fae that populate the world of KneUrth, such as: Brownies, Centaurs, Dryads, Leprechauns, Pixies, Satyrs, Sprites, Sylphs, among others. While this infuriated Florasena that Kariayn had attempted the Thread of Life, and made a number of mischievous creatures; Kariayn was also responsible for the creation of both the Sacred Unicorn and The Pegasus. The attempt at the Thread Of Life, however, drained her of all her magical energy, depleting her. Before she died, she wept tears of joy, witnessing her creations. Some souls are given a second chance and cast back down to Brengrand, to be reborn. It is unknown where it is Tearak resides; some stories even claim he’s an ancient, ageless human who resides in Brengrand somewhere, documenting all the souls who have left the mortal world. Perhaps one of the most noble of all the Planes, there are few more valiant, honorable and heroic than Valingard (whose name became known as “The Guard of Valor”). Valingard is the son of Floraena and an Immortal by the name of Truengard, who was often called “The Holy Knight.”

Truengard was one of the many Immortals who had become infected with the disease that Skortaurian had unleashed upon them. Though dying, Truengard led the forces of the Immortals at the Circle against the Circle of Shade. Though he fell in combat, it was Valingard, still young at this time, who picked up his father’s blade and shield and led the fractured forces of the Immortals against the Circle of Shade. It was also Valingard who severed Skortaurian’s right arm in combat, forcing the Circle of Shade to retreat.

Legend states that the world will end one day, when mortals shall be called to do battle in the Higher Plane of Aftgrand, against the Circle of Shade, led by Valingard, a day that has been called Terrarack (meaning “(which loosely translates to an end to all that ever began”) when Valingard is killed, and his father’s sword (Valinblade – The Blade of Valor) and shield (Valingard – for which he is named after, the Guard of Valor) are destroyed.

VALRANA – Goddess of Life

Alignment: Lawful Good
Worshipers: Priests, Mothers
Symbol: Two hands holding up an infant with the sunrise behind it

Valrana was entrusted with the Essence of Life when the world was still young, and after the death of Kariayn. Florasena was now too busy to keep track of all the life forms and took the time to teach Valrana how to weave life with the Essence of Life. She became the favored goddess of priests and expecting mothers, who loved her faithfully. However, Valrana’s own life would be cut short. A demon lord named Orcus sought to over throw Demogordon, who called himself the Prince of Demons. In order to do so he knew he would need more power. He developed a plan to enter Aftgrand and steal the Essence of Life, so that he could forge an army in his own image to help destroy Demogorgon. When Brezden discovered the Hades dimension, he fled, unaware that he was followed by Orcus (who had been watching him). Orcus confronted Valrana and demanded the secret of the Essence of Life. She fought Orcus and lost, and Orcus stole the Essence of Life, leaving her dead.

XARAGORN – God of Despair
Intermediate Deity

Symbol: A soul being ripped in two

Xaragorn is the god who often tries to captures the souls before they reach Tearak for judgement. His main goal seems to be to capture souls and send them back down to Brengrand, where they suffer as undead. Usually, those who commit such heinous acts are easily captured after facing judgement by Tearak, so Xaragorn sometimes captures them just after they’ve been judged. Xaragorn is the god who often seeks out those who suffer such great sorrow and despair and encourages them to take their own life; for when they do so, he’s able to immediately capture the soul before even the great Dedinsyn, God of Death, is aware of their fate. These are the souls that Xaragorn torments the most, before sending them back down to Brengrand to haunt the memories of the living, who knew them; spreading his despair. Those souls who are used in this fashion, are painfully aware of all the sorrow and torment their suicide has caused all the others left alive.

YEEGOWHEN – God of Gnolls
Intermediate Deity
Domain: Madness (Primary), Hatred, Spite
Alias: The Mad God
Plane: Garengrand, The Lower Plane.
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Worshipers: Gnolls
Symbol: A hyena skull with glowing red eyes

Yeegowhen is known as “The Mad God.” Having originally been nothing more than a hyena that supposedly fed on the fallen arm of Skortaurian after Valingard had severed it with his father’s Honor Sword; Yeegowhen rapidly evolved as the most savage of the hyena pack, changed by the dark magic that flowed through the severed arm, becoming the first gnoll-like creature to walk the world. Yeegowhen was driven insane by the magic that changed him. The spite that flowed through him, carried over by Skortaurian’s own spite, filled Yeegowhen. Yeegowhen cut his palm and let the other hyenas of his pack drink from him, and found that their bodies began to change too, evolving into gnolls.

The hatred and spite, and need to devour flesh, carried over into the gnolls. Adopting the worse possible traits of hyenas, gnolls became a destructive force unleashed on the world, with the sole purpose of killing and devouring. Their hatred and spite, as well as their need to devour flesh, runs so deep that gnolls do not even align themselves with other evil races, such as Orcs, Goblins, or Trolls – preferring instead, to go to war with them, and devour their flesh; because Yeegowhen evolved from devouring the flesh of Skortaurian’s arm; gnolls believe that devouring people grants them their powers and strength as well.

Furious that Urnevar’s symbol bares a close resembles to his own, Yeegowhen sought to destroy Urnevar. In the battle, he had caused enough damage that Urnevar was forced to flee from his tower; and it was there that Yeegowhen learned the dark arts of necromancy; but his madness would not allow him to maintain the knowledge; so during one of his attempts to work necromancy, he unwillingly created ghouls, who like him and the gnolls, shares an insatiable desire to devour flesh with voraciousness. As such, gnoll shamans frequently summon up ghouls, if the gnolls have quenched their hunger after a recent kill, to have the ghouls serve them.

DEMON LORDS

When the dragons were restored to the world, magic throughout the world was drastically changed. The Ashen Elf (Ashen’Var is his real name) was not the only one siphoning magic through dragons (though the general population of the world, was unaware of what they were doing). When that connection was broken in 1125, and Ashen’Var lost his magical abilities as the dragons re-entered the world, thousands of Wizards, Mages, and Witches also lost their powers. Desperate to reclaim their magic, many looked into ancient tomes and discovered that there was a dark dimension striken from most historical and magical books, that referenced devils and demons who once granted magic. And thus, many of these people turned to those demons and devils and found a way to communicate with them and have their powers restored – typically at a very dear price. Below are some of the more powerful and common demons and devils known to exist in Kne’Urth.

BELAROS – Demon Lord of Lies
Demon Lord
Domain: Blightbringer (Primary), Charm, Pleasure
Alias: The Pleasure Demon
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Symbol: Four fingered, demon hand, held open

Belaros is one of the most common demon lords whom Warlocks and Witches turn to. He promises them endless power, at a very small cost – the soul of their first born child, and if they do not have a child within a year of the promise made, he claims their soul instead. Belaros’ ultimate goal is to enter Brengrand and claim it as his own. Though he’s not able to enter Brengrand on his own, through his dark magic and dark packs, he’s able to grant his ‘seed’ int those who turn to him for magic; so that at conception, a part of him is rooted into Brengrand. It is said once enough roots have been planted, Belaros will be able to step through and enter Brengrand; so he is desperate for followers, and will do anything, and everything he can to deceive others into following him over other devils and demons.

DEMOGORGON – Prince of Demons
Greater Demon Lord
Domain: Chaos (Primary), Corruption, Demonic
Alias: The Chaos Lord
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Symbol: Monkey skull with four tentacles crisscrossing behind it

Demogorgon is one of the few demons that both the gods of Light and Shadow fear. He is able to tear through dimensions and cause chaos and death in his wake. His height varies from eighteen feet tall (which seems to be his normal height) to having supposedly been seen standing well over eighty feet tall. His head is two large baboon heads; each with its own personality; one preferring war and the other deception. His torso is that of a muscular baboon as well, with his arms extending out like giant snakes; his lower torso that of a reptile with enormous claws, and a long, forked tail. He is called the Prince of Demons, because he has claimed that title for himself. Others have fought him and had their essence torn in half.

ORCUS – Lord of the Dead
Greater Demon Lord
Domain: Death (Primary), Undeath, Vengeance
Alias: Master of the Broken Souls
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Symbol: An image of Orcus’ face devouring the world

Orcus is an envious demon lord, who wants the title of “Prince of Demons.” (Like all Demons and Demon Lords, his greed is uncontrolable). Having seen other great demons try and attack Demogorgon and lose violently, Orcus knew he needed a plan. He discovered through visions and magic of a god named Brezden who could pass between dimensions effortlessly. He put it in Brezden’s head that there was something of great value in his lair, and Brezden felt compelled to find it. Discovering the realm of Hades, Brezden immediately fled, unaware that Orcus had followed him through, with the intention of stealing the Essence of Life. He confronted Valrana, who was the current owner of the Essence of Life, and killed her and took it for himself and escaped back to Hades. In Hades he attempted to learn the use of the Essence of Life, but never uncovered its secret – instead, he had an army of undead soldiers, thus earning his title of Lord of the Dead. Belaros, the Demon Lord, learned of this, and in hopes of weakening both Demogorgon and Orcus, told Demogorgon about this. Demogorgon knew that Orcus had amassed a large enough army to potentially be a threat, so Demogorgon reached through the Veil and contacted Valingard, the most noble of the Gods and explained what Orcus had done. Demogorgon promised he would open the dimension to Hades, if Valingard swore to come by himself and to only attack Orcus. Valingard gave his word, which Demogorgon knew was his Oath, and granted the noble god access to Hades, where he confronted Orcus and nearly killed him, and recovered the Essence of Life and left. Orcus was furious and his hatred for Demogorgon only grew deeper.

NEBAKRAU – The Serpent Lord
Greater Demon Lord
Domain: Corruption (Primary), Chaos, Vengeance
Alias: Coils of the End Time
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Symbol: The world crushed between two massive coils

Nebakrau is a greater demon lord who was banished by the gods, because they believed he represented a great threat – with the Sisters of Fate, saying that they’d forseen a future where he gathers enough followers to open portals to the world that would allow his coils to constrict the world and crush it (and thus his symbol).

When a band of elves learned of Nebakrau’s existence – they grew interested why the gods had banished the demon lord; and when they learned that Nebakrau was once a demon of great power and magic, these elves took a deeper interest in what it was about the demon that the gods would fear so much that they banished him. Nebakrau promised these elves great power if they helped him regain his footing in the world. And in doing so, these elves turned away from the gods, and followed Nebakrau in hopes of turning away from divine power and gaining arcane power instead. Nebakrau delivered, showing them through visions – means of opening portals, tampering with time, traveling through dimensions – and so these elves rejected the gods and swore their allegiance to Nebakrau.

The other elves grew fearful and tried to stop these followers of Nebakrau – but these elves had gained significant arcane power. The other elves of the world banded against the followers of Nebakrau and labeled them “Githyanki” (which loosely translates to “Eternally Banished”). The followers of Nebakrau then left the world into another dimension, never to be seen again… until recently.

There is also a cult of humans who worship Nebakrau – and through him and his “dark blessings” – they too were changed to earn a more serpent like appearance, becoming the Yuan-Ti. The Yuan-Ti attempt to capture humans and offer them a choice of accepting Nebakrau’s blessing or perish – those who accept go through a painful ritual, involving being bitten by snakes and drinking the snake’s venom – and should they survive the experience – they too will be reborn as Yuan-Ti within seven days. Those who refuse to accept Nebakrau’s Blessing, are murdered and devoured.
