Origin of Freya Newmoon:
Hailing from New Moon Forest, from which she draws her last name, Freya is the first and only daughter of Stonehowl, the King of the New Moon Wood Elves. At a young age, Freya proved that she wanted more than to simply be “an heir to the throne.” She did not believe in sitting idly by while the boys and men practiced and hunted. Demanding to be taught how to fight, Stonehowl denied her training time and time again.
At the age of sixteen, Freya slipped away from the guards and went hunting herself, where she encountered human brigands who had taken to hiding in the forest to escape authorities who had been chasing them, but stopped at the forest’s edge (knowing that the Wood Elves of New Moon were not overly welcoming to humans). The human brigands quickly overpowered her, and knew, by the clothing she was wearing that she would fetch high coin for her release.
It was Freya’s fortune that a young, wood elf ranger, by the name of Galion, from Silvervale, happened to be hunting nearby when he heard the commotion of the fight. Attacking the human brigands, he freed Freya, and threw her a sword to help in the fight. Handling herself surprisingly well, she explained she has watched the men of New Moon practice, and spent time in her room doing the same. Galion and Freya took the humans to the edge of the forest and signaled the nearby human authorities, who were debating what to do – and were surprised to see the brigands handed to them, tied up.
When they returned to New Moon, Galion pleaded Freya’s case to her father, Stonehowl, who finally realized that if she was going to be sneaking out without his permission, that it would be better if she learned how to defend herself. She quickly learned how to use both a short bow and long bow; then learned to use medium to heavy armor; then moved to learning about swords and shields. She preferred the method of fighting known as dueling, and soon became a champion among her people.
News of the rising popularity and raids done by the Cult of the Dragon, soon reached New Moon, when a large group of mercenaries, hired by the Cult of the Dragon, set siege to the New Moon Forest. These were not common brigands that Freya had now helped defend against; these were experienced mercenaries and assassins. Despite her father’s protest, Freya would not turn her back on her people, and joined in the fight against the mercenaries. Unfortunately, they proved to be too many, and too well organized; and one struck her from behind, rendering her unconscious. The mercenary had been ready to deliver the killing blow, when he noticed her signet ring, and recognized her as someone of royalty. Throwing her unconscious body over his shoulder, he quickly made an exit to the wagons nearby and tied her up and kept watch, until the other mercenaries returned. Quickly, they rode southeast for many days, skirting around The Fern Dale, which was now under control of Emereth the Green (though the Cult of Dragons were aligned with her, she was … unpredictable at best). They arrived at Silvercrown Castle, where Freya was kept, barely fed, to be held for ransom.
