When a group of gnomes had tinkered together a flying ship powered by magic, they never expected what would happen next – the ship was thrust into the Astral Plane, drifting in an endless, beautiful sea of magic and wonder. Built like other ships, the gnome’s “Spelljammer” had escape ships that were also mechanical. Pausing near a number of interesting planets and moons, the gnomes took to adventuring to these areas, gathering resources and bringing it back to the main Spelljammer.
As the gnomes began to age, they crafted together mechanical gnomes which they called “AutoGnomes” to function for them – to get in places they no longer could, and to have the steady hands and ageless minds, that the gnomes, who were growing increasingly older over the years, could not maintain. When the original gnomes eventually passed away, the AutoGnomes continued as they always had – ever building onto the Spelljammer, over and over – so that above the Spelljammer a massive, mechanical world was created with gadgets, spyglasses that could see across the Astral Plane, vegitation (which had been created for the gnomes when they were alive; and though the AutoGnomes did not need to eat, they continued to maintain it). The AutoGnomes dubbed this mechanical planet as “Gnomewhere.” (Apparently even mechanical gnomes maintained the odd sense of humor of gnomes, creating a play on the word of “nowhere” – indicating they were in the middle of nowhere).
The AutoGnomes began to develop servants to work around Gnomewhere, as it continued to expand in size. It’s been speculated that it was the AutoGnomes who may have forged the first Modrons as well.
